Ingredients

  • 0.25 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
  • salt (pinch (optional, enhances chocolate flavor))

Steps

  1. 1

Add the unsweetened cocoa powder, brown sugar, water, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt to a small saucepan.

  2. 2

Whisk the ingredients together until they are well combined and no large clumps of cocoa powder remain.

  3. 3

Place the saucepan over medium-low heat and bring the mixture to a simmer.

  4. 4

Simmer for 5–8 minutes, whisking often, until the syrup has slightly thickened.

  5. 5

Remove from heat and let the syrup cool completely in the pan.

  6. 6

Transfer the cooled syrup to a jar or syrup bottle and store in the refrigerator.

Notes

Storage: Keep in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Serving Suggestion: Mix 1–2 tablespoons of syrup with espresso or cold brew, your choice of milk, and ice. Top with whipped cream if desired.
