Ingredients
- 500 g 5% beef mince
- 2 tsp Chinese five-spice powder
- 1 tsp Chilli flakes (For the beef)
- 3 tbsp Hoisin sauce
- 1 tbsp Light soy sauce
- 1 tbsp Dark soy sauce
- 3 tbsp White wine vinegar (Used in both the beef and salad; total amount combined)
- 2 tbsp Brown sugar (One heaped tablespoon for the beef and one heaped tablespoon for the salad)
- 2 Carrots (Shredded)
- 1 Cucumber (Shredded)
- Chives (A handful)
- Fresh coriander (A handful)
- 1 tsp Chilli flakes (For the salad)
- 2 cloves Garlic (Minced)
- 1 tbsp Brown sugar (Heaped; for the salad)
- 1 tbsp Sesame oil
- 1 tbsp White wine vinegar (For the salad)
- 250 g Uncooked rice (To serve)
Steps
- 1
Shred the carrots and cucumber. Mince the garlic, and prepare the chives and fresh coriander.
- 2
Combine the shredded carrot and cucumber with the chives, coriander, salad chilli flakes, minced garlic, brown sugar, sesame oil, and 1 tablespoon of white wine vinegar. Let the salad sit while you prepare and cook the beef so it can absorb the flavors.
- 3
Cook the rice according to its package instructions; the source lists uncooked rice to serve but does not specify a cooking method.
- 4
Heat a frying pan and add the beef mince with the Chinese five-spice powder and beef chilli flakes. Fry until the beef is browned, breaking it up as it cooks.
- 5
Add the hoisin sauce, light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, 3 tablespoons of white wine vinegar, and the heaped tablespoon of brown sugar to the browned beef.
- 6
Fry for a few more minutes, allowing the sauce to caramelize. Serve the hoisin beef with the carrot salad and rice.
Notes
The source title says 15 minutes. The beef ingredient list gives 1 tablespoon plus 2 tablespoons of white wine vinegar, combined here as 3 tablespoons; the salad has an additional 1 tablespoon. Brown sugar is listed as a heaped tablespoon for each component. Rice cooking instructions are not provided.
