Ingredients
- 2.5 cup Long-grain white rice (Uncooked)
- 1 cup Noodles (Short noodles or broken noodles)
- Vegetable oil (Enough to sauté the noodles; approximately 1 tbsp)
- 1 sobre Dried onion soup mix (Use your preferred brand; the weight may vary by brand)
- 4 cup Hot water or broth (Use slightly more than 4 cups; chicken, beef, or vegetable broth may be used)
- Salt (To taste; adjust carefully because the onion soup mix and broth may already contain salt)
- 3 tbsp Butter (Approximately 42 g)
Steps
- 1
Heat a heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven over medium heat and add the vegetable oil.
- 2
Add the noodles and sauté them, stirring constantly, until they turn a deep golden brown. Watch them closely because they can burn quickly.
- 3
Reduce the heat and add the uncooked rice. Sauté the rice with the noodles for a couple of minutes, stirring so it becomes coated with the fat and heats evenly.
- 4
Add the packet of onion soup mix and stir well until it is evenly distributed among the rice and noodles.
- 5
Pour in slightly more than 4 cups of hot water or broth. You can use chicken, beef, or vegetable broth; vegetable broth was used in the original recipe.
- 6
Taste the liquid and add salt to taste, keeping in mind that the onion soup mix and broth may already be seasoned.
- 7
Add the butter and stir gently so it melts and incorporates.
- 8
Cook uncovered over medium heat until most of the liquid has been absorbed and the surface of the rice is only slightly moist, approximately 12-15 minutes.
- 9
Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and continue cooking for 10-12 minutes, until the rice is tender and the liquid has been completely absorbed.
- 10
Turn off the heat and let the covered rice rest for 5 minutes. Gently fluff with a fork and serve hot.
Notes
The amount of oil was not specified in the source; 1 tbsp was estimated for sautéing. The indicated amount of liquid is slightly more than 4 cups, so add a little extra if the rice is still firm and the liquid was absorbed too quickly. Broth provides more flavor than water, but adjust the salt at the end.
