- salt and pepper (To taste; season the patties during cooking, not before)
- 8 slices American cheese
- oil (For cooking the patties)
- 0.5 cup mayonnaise (For the sauce)
- 3 tbsp ketchup (For the sauce)
- 2 tbsp relish (For the sauce)
- 1 tbsp white vinegar or pickle juice (For the sauce; use either white vinegar or pickle juice)
- 2 tbsp caramelized onions (For the sauce)
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (For the sauce)
- 0.5 tsp sugar (For the sauce)
- salt (To taste; for the sauce)
- 0.5 tsp black pepper (For the sauce)
- 1 tsp garlic powder (For the sauce)
- 6 soft hamburger buns (For assembly)
- 2 large tomatoes (Sliced)
- 0.5 cup pickles (For assembly)
- 1 cup lettuce leaves (Shred for assembly)
- 0.333333 cup caramelized onions (For topping the assembled burgers)
- butter (For buttering the cut sides of the buns)
Steps
- 1
Divide the ground beef into 2–3 oz portions and form each portion into a loose ball. Do not season the beef yet.
- 2
Heat a griddle or heavy skillet over high heat. Lightly oil the cooking surface.
- 3
Place the beef portions on the hot surface and immediately smash them into thin patties.
- 4
Season the patties with salt and pepper while they cook.
- 5
Cook the patties for 1–2 minutes, until the edges are crisp.
- 6
Flip each patty and place one slice of American cheese on each patty.
- 7
Continue cooking until the cheese is fully melted.
- 8
Stack two cheesy patties together to form each double portion, allowing the melted cheese to join the layers.
- 9
Combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, caramelized onions, salt, garlic powder, sugar, white vinegar or pickle juice, Worcestershire sauce, and black pepper until the sauce is smooth.
- 10
Cover the sauce and refrigerate it for at least 30 minutes so the flavors can meld.
- 11
Butter the cut sides of the hamburger buns.
- 12
Toast the buttered bun halves on a flat-top or skillet until lightly golden, then set them aside.
- 13
Spread a layer of sauce on the bottom bun.
- 14
Add pickles, shredded lettuce, and tomato slices to each sauced bottom bun.
- 15
Place a double patty portion on top of the vegetables.
- 16
Top the patties with caramelized onions. Add additional sauce if desired, then finish with the top bun.
Notes
The source lists 6 buns but provides 8 cheese slices and enough beef for approximately 4 double burgers. It does not specify the quantity or preparation method for the caramelized onions, or the amount of butter used for toasting.
