Ingredients
- 26 oz frozen shredded hash browns (Use frozen; do not thaw.)
- 1 onion (Diced; optional.)
- 1 cup milk (Half-and-half or heavy cream may be used instead.)
- 0.5 cup sour cream
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (Referred to in the source as “W sauce.”)
- 1 tbsp garlic powder (The source adds a little more for good measure.)
- 2 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 can cheddar cheese soup (The creator used spicy nacho cheese soup; regular cheddar cheese soup is the usual choice. Queso or nacho cheese may also be used.)
- 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese (Shredded; add 1 cup to the casserole and reserve 1 cup for the top.)
- 0.5 lb sliced roast beef (Tear into pieces.)
- Arby’s sauce (For drizzling over the finished casserole.)
- Horsey sauce (For drizzling over the finished casserole.)
Steps
- 1
Place the frozen shredded hash browns in a crockpot. Do not thaw them first.
- 2
Dice the optional onion and add it to the crockpot.
- 3
Add the milk, sour cream, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and cheddar cheese soup. Stir thoroughly to combine. The source notes that the garlic powder can be increased slightly for extra flavor.
- 4
Lay paper towels over the top of the mixture, using enough to cover the surface without leaving a large amount hanging over the sides. The paper towels absorb moisture and help keep the hash browns from becoming mushy.
- 5
Cover the crockpot and cook on high for 2 to 3 hours, or on low for 5 to 6 hours. If the paper towels become soaked, replace them. The creator stirred the hash browns once, but notes that stirring is not necessary.
- 6
When the initial cooking is complete, remove the paper towels. Add 1 cup of the shredded sharp cheddar cheese and the torn roast beef.
- 7
Carefully mix the hash brown mixture, cheese, and roast beef together.
- 8
Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of shredded sharp cheddar cheese evenly over the top.
- 9
Replace the lid and cook on high for another 20 to 30 minutes, until the added cheese has melted.
- 10
Drizzle Arby’s sauce and Horsey sauce over the finished casserole before serving.
Notes
The source does not specify the crockpot size or exact amounts of the finishing sauces. Cooking time depends on the selected high or low setting. The creator changed the paper towels once during cooking.
