Ingredients
- 2 Steak (e.g., ribeye or sirloin)
- 4 Potatoes (peeled and cubed for mashing)
- 4 tbsp Butter (divided for potatoes and sauce)
- 0.25 cup Milk (for mashed potatoes)
- 8 oz Mushrooms (sliced)
- 2 cloves Garlic (minced)
- 0.5 cup Heavy Cream (for mushroom sauce)
- Salt and Black Pepper (to taste)
- 1 tbsp Olive Oil (for searing steak)
Steps
- 1
Place the peeled and cubed potatoes in a large pot of salted water. Bring to a boil and cook until tender, about 15-20 minutes.
- 2
Drain the potatoes and mash them with 2 tablespoons of butter and the milk until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Keep warm.
- 3
Season the steaks generously on both sides with salt and black pepper.
- 4
Heat olive oil in a heavy skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Sear the steaks to your desired level of doneness (about 4-5 minutes per side for medium-rare). Remove from the pan and let rest.
- 5
In the same pan, melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the sliced mushrooms and sauté until browned and the moisture has evaporated.
- 6
Add the minced garlic to the mushrooms and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- 7
Pour in the heavy cream and bring to a simmer. Let the sauce thicken for 2-3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
- 8
Plate the mashed potatoes, top with the grilled steak, and pour the mushroom sauce over the top.
Notes
The mushroom sauce can be enhanced with a splash of Worcestershire sauce or fresh thyme if available. Ensure the steak rests for at least 5 minutes before slicing to keep it juicy.
