Ingredients
- 14 oz firm or extra-firm tofu (cut into cubes; typically one standard block)
- 2 tbsp cornstarch (for coating)
- 0.5 tsp salt (to taste)
- 0.25 tsp white pepper
- 0.25 tsp five spice powder
- 0.25 tsp Sichuan peppercorns (ground)
- oil spray (for air frying)
- 2 garlic (cloves, minced)
- 1 green onion (sliced)
- 1 chili pepper (fresh, sliced (optional for heat))
Steps
- 1
Prepare the tofu by cutting it into bite-sized cubes. If using firm tofu, pat dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.
- 2
In a large bowl, toss the tofu cubes with cornstarch, salt, white pepper, five spice powder, and ground Sichuan peppercorns until evenly coated.
- 3
Place the coated tofu in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Lightly spray with oil.
- 4
Air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 15 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through, until the tofu is golden brown and crispy.
- 5
While the tofu is hot, toss it with the minced garlic, sliced green onions, and chili peppers to allow the aromatics to soften slightly from the residual heat.
- 6
Serve immediately while crispy.
