Ingredients

  • 4 Hot dogs (high quality)
  • 1 tbsp Vegetable oil (for the pan)
  • 4 Hot dog buns
  • Mayonnaise (to taste)
  • 0.25 cup White onion (finely chopped)
  • 0.25 cup Bell peppers (diced)
  • Mustard (to taste)

Steps

  1. 1

Insert a wooden skewer through the entire length of the center of each hot dog.

  2. 2

Using a sharp knife, cut the hot dog at an angle while rotating it, allowing the knife to touch the skewer to create an even spiral.

  3. 3

Carefully remove the skewer from the hot dog.

  4. 4

Heat a skillet or griddle over a grill or stove on medium-high heat with a bit of oil.

  5. 5

Place the hot dogs in the pan and cook, turning occasionally, until the spirals open up and the exterior is well caramelized and golden brown.

  6. 6

Lightly toast the hot dog buns if desired.

  7. 7

Place the hot dogs in the buns and fill the spiral gaps with mayonnaise, chopped onion, peppers, and mustard.

Notes

This technique can also be done in an air fryer for crispy results. The spiral cut not only improves texture but also prevents the condiments from sliding off the hot dog.
