Ingredients

  • 1 thick-cut white bread or shokupan (Use a thick slice, about 1 inch (2.5 cm) thick.)
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter (Divided if desired; use enough to coat the pan and bread.)
  • 1 tbsp honey (Add more or less to taste.)
  • flaky sea salt (Optional, to taste.)

Steps

  1. 1

Place a skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Add the butter and let it melt gently, taking care not to let it burn.

  2. 2

Add the honey to the melted butter and stir briefly to combine. Cook until the mixture is glossy and beginning to bubble, about 30 seconds to 1 minute.

  3. 3

Place the thick slice of bread in the honey-butter mixture. Press it gently into the pan so the bottom absorbs the glaze.

  4. 4

Cook the bread over medium-low heat until the underside is deeply golden, crisp, and caramelized, about 2 to 3 minutes. Adjust the heat if the honey darkens too quickly.

  5. 5

Turn the bread over and cook the second side until crisp and golden, adding any remaining honey-butter mixture around or over the bread so it coats the surface, about 2 minutes.

  6. 6

Transfer the toast to a plate, let it cool for 1 minute so the caramelized coating can set, and finish with a pinch of flaky sea salt if using. Serve warm.
