Ingredients

  • 3 ripe bananas (mashed)
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 2 eggs (large, room temperature)
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup light brown sugar (packed)
  • 2.25 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup sour cream
  • 0.75 cup chocolate chips (plus extra for topping)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 0.25 tsp salt

Steps

  1. 1

Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Grease and line a 9x5-inch loaf pan with parchment paper.

  2. 2

In a large bowl, add bananas and mash until smooth, leaving a few chunks for texture.

  3. 3

Add the melted butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and eggs to the mashed bananas. Mix until the mixture is smooth.

  4. 4

Add the sour cream and vanilla extract, and mix until well combined.

  5. 5

In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt.

  6. 6

Fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients just until combined, being careful not to overmix.

  7. 7

Gently fold in the 3/4 cup of chocolate chips.

  8. 8

Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan. If desired, sprinkle extra chocolate chips on top.

  9. 9

    Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 10 minutes.

  10. 10

Reduce the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for 50-60 minutes. Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick in the center; it should come out with a few moist crumbs.

  11. 11

Lightly tent the pan with foil partway through the baking time to prevent the top from over-browning.

  12. 12

Cool the bread in the pan for 15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Based on community comments, Greek yogurt or curd can be used as a substitute for sour cream. The initial high temperature helps the bread rise quickly, creating a better dome.
