Ingredients

  • 1 lb steak (sliced thin (sirloin recommended))
  • 2 broccoli crowns (medium sized, cut into florets and blanched)
  • 2 garlic cloves (freshly minced)
  • 0.25 onion (chopped)
  • 2.5 tbsp hoisin sauce (2-3 tbsp)
  • 1.5 tbsp rice wine vinegar (1-2 tbsp)
  • 0.375 cup soy sauce (1/4-1/2 cup)
  • 1.5 tsp toasted sesame oil (1-2 tsp)
  • 0.25 cup honey
  • 2 tsp cornstarch (for slurry)
  • 3 tsp water (for slurry)
  • 1.5 tsp white pepper (1-2 tsp)
  • 1.5 tsp onion powder (1-2 tsp)
  • 0.5 tsp ground ginger
  • 8 oz spaghetti or chow mein noodles (cooked according to package directions)

Steps

  1. 1

In a medium bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, ground ginger, onion powder, white pepper, sesame oil, honey (or white sugar), and rice wine vinegar.

  2. 2

In a small separate container, mix 2 tsp cornstarch with 3 tsp water to create a slurry, then whisk this into the sauce mixture.

  3. 3

Slice the steak thin against the grain. Place the steak in a bowl and pour over a portion of the prepared sauce to act as a marinade. Let the beef marinate for 15 to 30 minutes.

  4. 4

While the beef marinates, blanch the broccoli crowns in boiling water for 1-2 minutes until bright green but still crisp, then drain.

  5. 5

Heat a skillet or wok over high heat until piping hot. Add the marinated steak pieces in a single layer.

  6. 6

Sear the steak for a couple of minutes until browned, then remove the steak from the pan and set aside.

  7. 7

In the same pan, add the chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing until fragrant.

  8. 8

Add the blanched broccoli to the pan and pour in the remaining sauce mixture.

  9. 9

Allow the sauce to simmer and thicken for a minute or two.

  10. 10

Add the cooked steak back into the pan along with the cooked spaghetti or chow mein noodles.

  11. 11

Toss everything together until the noodles and beef are thoroughly coated in the thickened sauce and heated through.

Notes

For the best results, ensure your pan is very hot before adding the steak to get a good sear without overcooking the center. You can substitute fresh ginger for the ground ginger if preferred.
