Ingredients
- 1 cup Warm milk (about 110°F/45°C)
- 0.25 cup Granulated sugar (divided)
- 2.25 tsp Active dry yeast (1 standard packet)
- 0.5 cup Unsalted butter (softened, divided)
- 1 Large egg (room temperature)
- 3.5 cup All-purpose flour (plus more for dusting)
- 0.5 tsp Salt
- 3 Apples (peeled, cored, and finely diced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp))
- 0.5 cup Brown sugar (packed)
- 1 tbsp Ground cinnamon
- 0.5 cup Salted caramel sauce (for filling and drizzling)
Steps
- 1
In a small bowl, combine warm milk, 1 tablespoon of the granulated sugar, and the yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- 2
In a large bowl or stand mixer, combine the yeast mixture, remaining granulated sugar, 4 tablespoons of softened butter, egg, and salt.
- 3
Gradually add the flour and knead for 5-7 minutes until a smooth, elastic dough forms. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for 1-1.5 hours until doubled in size.
- 4
While the dough rises, prepare the filling by sautéing the diced apples with 2 tablespoons of butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a skillet over medium heat until softened, about 8-10 minutes. Let cool completely.
- 5
Punch down the risen dough and roll it out on a floured surface into a large rectangle.
- 6
Spread a thin layer of salted caramel sauce over the dough, then top evenly with the cooled apple mixture.
- 7
Roll the dough tightly into a log and cut into 12 even slices. Place the slices in a greased 9x13 inch baking pan.
- 8
Cover and let the buns rise for another 30-45 minutes. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- 9
Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the buns are golden brown.
- 10
Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before drizzling with extra salted caramel sauce and a pinch of flaky sea salt if desired.
Notes
For the best results, ensure your apples are diced very small so the buns are easy to roll. If the dough is too sticky during kneading, add flour 1 tablespoon at a time.
