Ingredients

  • 6 Sandwich bread (Slices)
  • 8 Cheese (Slices)
  • 4 Cooked ham (Slices)
  • 2 tbsp Mayonnaise (Approximate amount for spreading)
  • 1 tbsp Mustard (Approximate amount for spreading)
  • 1 Egg
  • 2 tbsp Milk (A splash; approximate amount)
  • Black pepper (To taste)
  • Nutmeg (To taste)
  • 1 tbsp Butter (A little, for browning; approximate amount)

Steps

  1. 1

For each sandwich, lay out three slices of bread. Spread one slice with mayonnaise. Top with cheese, cooked ham, and another layer of cheese.

  2. 2

Spread another slice with mustard and place it on top of the previous layers. Spread the top of that slice with mustard and repeat the layers of cheese, cooked ham, and cheese. Finish with the third slice, spread on the inside with mayonnaise. Repeat the assembly to make the second sandwich.

  3. 3

In a deep plate or bowl, beat the egg with the milk, black pepper, and nutmeg until evenly combined.

  4. 4

Heat a skillet over medium heat and add the butter. Wait until it melts and coats the bottom without allowing it to burn.

  5. 5

Dip each sandwich in the egg mixture on all sides. Do this carefully so the bread absorbs the mixture while maintaining its shape.

  6. 6

Place one sandwich in the skillet and brown it first on the edges, turning it so that all sides become toasted.

  7. 7

Then brown both flat sides over medium heat until the outside is well toasted and the cheese inside has melted. Cook the second sandwich in the same way; add a little more butter if the skillet becomes dry.

  8. 8

Serve the sandwiches immediately while hot, crisp on the outside and gooey on the inside.

Notes

The amounts of mayonnaise, mustard, milk, and butter are not specified exactly in the source; approximate measurements are provided to make preparation easier. Monitor the medium heat so the bread browns without burning before the cheese melts.
