Steps
Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Add the thin egg noodles and cook for 6 minutes, then drain.
While the noodles cook, brown the ground chuck in margarine in a skillet, breaking it up as it cooks. Season with garlic salt, pepper, and salt.
Add the tomato sauce to the browned meat. Simmer until the mixture is blended.
Blend the sour cream and softened cream cheese together until smooth. Stir in the finely chopped spring onions, including the tops.
Butter a 3-quart casserole dish. Spread in a layer of noodles, followed by a layer of the sour cream and cream cheese mixture, then a layer of the meat mixture.
Repeat the layers until the ingredients are used, ending with the meat mixture.
Bake at 350°F (180 °C) (175°C (350 °F)) for 50 minutes.
For the creator's version, remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle sharp cheddar over the hot top so it melts without becoming crusty. The original recipe puts the cheddar on before baking.
Notes
The original cookbook specifies sharp cheddar before baking; the creator adds it after baking while the casserole is still hot. The source gives tomato sauce as 2 small cans or 1 large can without can sizes, and does not specify amounts for margarine, seasonings, or topping cheese. The source description says the creator substituted ground turkey, while the cookbook ingredient list specifies ground chuck.
