Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef
  • 1 Onion (Sliced)
  • 1 tbsp Garlic (Minced)
  • Oil (For cooking; use a little oil)
  • Sesame oil (For finishing)
  • Sesame seeds (For garnish; toasted if desired)
  • Scallion (Chopped; for garnish)
  • Kimchi or radish kimchi (For serving; a vegetable of choice may be used instead)
  • Cooked rice (For serving)
  • Cucumber (For serving; mentioned in the video transcript)
  • 2 tbsp Brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp Mirin
  • 4 tbsp Soy sauce (Low-sodium preferred)
  • 1 tbsp Korean plum syrup (Substitute with 1 tbsp water plus 1 tsp apple cider vinegar)
  • 1 tbsp Water (Only if using the plum-syrup substitute)
  • 1 tsp Apple cider vinegar (Only if using the plum-syrup substitute)

Steps

  1. 1

Peel and slice the onion. Set it aside, and have the minced garlic ready.

  2. 2

Combine the brown sugar, mirin, soy sauce, and Korean plum syrup in a bowl. If substituting, use 1 tablespoon water plus 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar. Mix well and set the sauce aside.

  3. 3

Heat a little cooking oil in a pan over medium-high heat until hot.

  4. 4

Add the sliced onion and cook for 1–2 minutes, until it begins to soften.

  5. 5

Add the minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute, until fragrant.

  6. 6

Add the ground beef and break it into small pieces with a spatula as it cooks.

  7. 7

When the beef is about 30% cooked, pour in the prepared sauce and mix it through the beef.

  8. 8

Let the beef and sauce cook, initially leaving it undisturbed for a couple of minutes. Stir occasionally and repeat until all or most of the liquid has evaporated. The beef may be kept slightly saucy, especially for children.

  9. 9

Turn off the heat. Drizzle with sesame oil and give the beef a final mix.

  10. 10

Assemble bowls with cooked rice, the beef bulgogi, scallions, sesame seeds, and kimchi or another vegetable. Cucumber is also suggested for serving.

Notes

The source does not specify an exact amount of cooking oil, finishing sesame oil, rice, or garnishes. The transcript says the beef can remain a little saucy and mentions serving it with cucumbers, chopped green onions, and toasted sesame seeds.
