Ingredients

  • 3 New York strip steak (cubed into bite-sized pieces)
  • 0.25 cup dark soy sauce (estimated for marinade)
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 3 eggs (beaten)
  • 0.5 cup onion (diced)
  • 3 clove garlic (minced)
  • 3 cup jasmine rice (cooked, day-old or chilled for 4-6 hours)
  • 1 cup mixed vegetables (frozen peas and carrots recommended)
  • 2 tbsp green onions (sliced for garnish)
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds (for garnish)
  • yum yum sauce (for drizzling)

Steps

  1. 1

In a small bowl, whisk together the dark soy sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, gochujang, and honey to create the marinade.

  2. 2

Place the cubed steak bites into a bowl and pour the marinade over them. Toss to coat thoroughly.

  3. 3

Heat a pan over medium-high heat with a small amount of oil. Add the steak bites and cook for about 2 to 3 minutes per side until browned and cooked to your preference. Remove the steak from the pan and set aside.

  4. 4

Clean out the pan, then pour in the leftover marinade used for the steak. Heat over medium heat and allow it to simmer and reduce until it thickens into a syrupy barbecue sauce. Remove the sauce and set aside.

  5. 5

Clean the pan once more. Add a little oil and the beaten eggs. Scramble them quickly until just set, then remove from the pan and set aside.

  6. 6

In the same pan, add the diced onions and minced garlic. Sauté until fragrant and the onions are translucent.

  7. 7

Add the day-old jasmine rice and the mixed vegetables to the pan. Toss everything together to break up the rice and heat through.

  8. 8

Pour the reduced barbecue sauce over the rice and vegetables. Toss well to ensure the rice is evenly coated.

  9. 9

Return the cooked steak bites and scrambled eggs to the pan. Give everything a final toss to combine and heat through.

  10. 10

Serve immediately topped with sliced green onions, sesame seeds, and a drizzle of yum yum sauce.

Notes

For the best fried rice texture, use rice that has been cooked and refrigerated for at least 4-6 hours or overnight. You can substitute the steak for chicken if preferred. If you are short on time, the steak can be cooked in an air fryer instead of a pan.
