Ingredients
- 1 lb Ground beef (80/20 or 90/10 lean)
- 12 oz Smoked sausage (sliced into rounds (such as andouille or kielbasa))
- 1 Green cabbage (large head, chopped into bite-sized pieces)
- 1 Yellow onion (diced)
- 1 Green bell pepper (diced)
- 3 clove Garlic (minced)
- 0.5 cup Beef broth
- 1 tbsp Cajun seasoning (or to taste)
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp Olive oil (for browning)
- Salt and black pepper (to taste)
Steps
- 1
Heat olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the sliced smoked sausage and cook until browned and crispy on both sides, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the sausage from the pan and set aside.
- 2
In the same pan, add the ground beef. Cook, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until browned and no longer pink. Drain any excess grease if necessary.
- 3
Add the diced onion and green bell pepper to the ground beef. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until the vegetables begin to soften.
- 4
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- 5
Add the chopped cabbage to the pan in batches, stirring to incorporate with the meat and aromatics.
- 6
Season the mixture with Cajun seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Pour in the beef broth to help steam the cabbage.
- 7
Return the browned sausage to the pan and stir everything together.
- 8
Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover the pan with a lid, and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the cabbage has reached your desired level of tenderness.
- 9
Give the dish a final stir and adjust seasoning to taste before serving.
Notes
For extra heat, add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce. This dish stores well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and the flavors often improve the next day.
