Ingredients
- 3 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 cloves garlic (Minced)
- 4 slices hearty white sandwich bread (Cut into 1/2-inch cubes; about 4 cups. Most savory bread may be used instead.)
Steps
- 1
Adjust the oven rack to the middle position. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- 2
Add the olive oil, minced garlic, and salt to a large bowl. Whisk until the garlic and salt are evenly distributed through the oil.
- 3
Add the cubed bread to the bowl. Toss thoroughly until the bread is evenly coated with the seasoned oil.
- 4
Spread the coated bread cubes in a single layer on a baking sheet, leaving space between pieces so they can crisp evenly.
- 5
Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20 to 25 minutes, tossing or stirring once if needed, until the croutons are golden brown and crisp.
- 6
Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the croutons cool before serving.
Notes
The croutons can be made ahead and stored in an airtight container for about one week. Variations from the source: For Texas Chili Croutons, whisk 1 tsp chili powder, 1/4 tsp pepper, and 1/8 tsp cayenne into the oil with the garlic and salt. For BBQ Croutons, omit the garlic and whisk 1/2 tsp each cumin and coriander, 1/4 tsp paprika, and 1/2 tsp cayenne into the oil with the salt. For Herbed Croutons, whisk 2 tsp each minced fresh rosemary, thyme, and sage—or 1/2 tsp each dried herb—and 1/4 tsp pepper into the oil with the garlic and salt. For Cheesy Parmesan Croutons, increase the olive oil to 6 tbsp and toss 1 cup grated Parmesan with the oiled bread cubes before baking.
