Ingredients
- 1 lb Pizza dough (Store-bought or homemade)
- Vegetable oil (For deep frying)
- 0.5 cup Granulated sugar (For coating)
- 1 tsp Ground cinnamon (Adjust to taste)
- 0.5 cup Chocolate chips (For dipping sauce)
- 0.25 cup Heavy cream (For dipping sauce)
Steps
- 1
Fill a heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer with vegetable oil to a depth of at least 2-3 inches. Heat the oil to 350°F (175°C).
- 2
While the oil heats, divide the pizza dough into small, bite-sized pieces, roughly 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. Roll them into slightly irregular balls.
- 3
In a medium bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon until well combined. Set aside.
- 4
Carefully drop the dough balls into the hot oil in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pot.
- 5
Fry the zeppoli for 2-4 minutes, turning occasionally with a slotted spoon, until they are puffed and golden brown on all sides.
- 6
Remove the zeppoli from the oil using a slotted spoon and drain briefly on a paper towel-lined plate.
- 7
While still hot, toss the fried dough in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until evenly coated.
- 8
To make the chocolate sauce, combine chocolate chips and heavy cream in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 20-second intervals, stirring in between, until smooth and glossy.
- 9
Serve the warm zeppoli immediately with the chocolate dipping sauce on the side.
Notes
For the best texture, ensure the oil is at the correct temperature; if it's too cool, the dough will absorb too much oil and become greasy. You can also serve these with a raspberry or caramel sauce.
