Ingredients

  • 3 ripe bananas (Large; roughly mashed. Use ripe bananas for optimal flavor.)
  • 8 tbsp unsalted butter (Melted)
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup packed brown sugar (Packed)
  • 1 large egg (At room temperature)
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste (Use either pure vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste.)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (Sifted)
  • 0.5 cup natural cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • salt (Pinch)
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (Fold into the batter; additional chocolate chips may be sprinkled on top, but the amount is unspecified.)
  • 0.333 cup chopped walnuts (Optional; for sprinkling on top.)

Steps

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Line a 9-by-5-inch loaf pan with parchment paper.

  2. 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the roughly mashed bananas, melted butter, granulated sugar, packed brown sugar, room-temperature egg, and vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste. Whisk until smooth.

  3. 3

In a separate bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, natural cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Sifting helps prevent lumps and promotes an even texture.

  4. 4

Gradually add the sifted dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing only until just combined. Do not overmix, so the finished bread retains its moisture.

  5. 5

Fold the semi-sweet chocolate chips into the batter.

  6. 6

Pour the batter into the parchment-lined loaf pan.

  7. 7

If using, sprinkle the chopped walnuts over the top, along with additional chocolate chips.

  8. 8

Bake for 1 hour 15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  9. 9

Remove the loaf from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes.

  10. 10

Transfer the bread to a wire rack to continue cooling before serving.

Notes

The amount of additional chocolate chips for topping is not specified. The source recommends ripe bananas for the best flavor, sifting the flour to prevent lumps, and avoiding overmixing to maintain moisture.
