Ingredients
- 0.5 white onion (thinly sliced)
- 1 tbsp olive oil (for cooking onions)
- 0.5 cup mayo
- 2 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (plus a couple extra dashes for the sauce)
- 1 tsp cayenne pepper
- 0.5 lb ground beef (formed into balls)
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- salt (to taste)
- black pepper (to taste)
- 2 slices cheddar cheese
- 2 slices American cheese
- 2 slices sourdough bread
- 1 tbsp butter (for toasting bread)
Steps
- 1
Thinly slice half of a white onion.
- 2
Add the sliced onions to a pan with olive oil and cook over medium heat until they become soft and jammy.
- 3
While the onions cook, prepare the sauce by combining 1/2 cup mayo, 2 tbsp Dijon mustard, 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce, 1 tsp cayenne pepper, and a pinch of salt and pepper in a small bowl. Mix until smooth.
- 4
Divide the ground beef into balls. Season the beef balls generously with salt, black pepper, and 1 tsp garlic powder.
- 5
Heat a clean pan or griddle over high heat. Place a beef ball in the pan and press it down firmly with a spatula to create a thin patty.
- 6
Cook for a couple of minutes until a crust forms, then flip the patty.
- 7
Immediately top the patty with a slice of cheddar and a slice of American cheese. Cook until the cheese is melted and gooey, then remove from the pan.
- 8
Wipe the pan or use a clean one to melt butter. Place a slice of sourdough bread in the pan.
- 9
Assemble the sandwich by placing the cooked patties onto the bread, followed by a generous portion of the caramelized onions.
- 10
Spread the prepared sauce onto the second slice of sourdough and place it on top of the onions.
- 11
Flip the entire sandwich to toast the other side until the bread is golden brown and crispy.
Notes
The author notes this is essentially a fancy cheeseburger. For the best results, ensure the pan is very hot before smashing the beef to get a good sear.
