Ingredients

  • 500 g Boerewors sausage (Casing removed (optional, based on video context))
  • 400 g Puff pastry (One sheet, thawed if frozen)
  • 2 tbsp Butter (Melted, for brushing)
  • 1 Egg (Beaten for egg wash)

Steps

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. 2

Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface.

  3. 3

Brush the surface of the pastry with a thin layer of melted butter or margarine.

  4. 4

Remove the boerewors meat from its casing (optional) or cut the sausage into lengths that match the width of your pastry strips.

  5. 5

Place the sausage along the edge of the pastry and roll the pastry over the meat until it is fully enclosed.

  6. 6

Seal the edges with a bit of water or egg wash and cut the long roll into mini bite-sized pieces.

  7. 7

Place the mini pies onto the prepared baking sheet, seam-side down.

  8. 8

Brush the tops of the pastry with the beaten egg wash for a golden finish.

  9. 9

Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown and the sausage is cooked through.

Notes

While the creator used butter on the pastry, some commenters suggest it may be too oily given the fat content of the sausage; you can skip the butter layer if preferred. Adding a sprinkle of sesame seeds or poppy seeds on top of the egg wash adds a nice touch.
