Ingredients
- 1 cup warm water (110 degrees F)
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 2 tsp active dry yeast
- 3.5 cup all purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 egg (for the dough)
- 0.25 cup neutral oil
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- sesame seeds (for topping)
Steps
- 1
In a small bowl, combine 1 cup warm water (110°F), 2 tablespoons sugar, and 2 teaspoons active dry yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 10 minutes until a layer of foam forms on top.
- 2
In a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, add 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 egg, 1/4 cup neutral oil, and the activated yeast mixture.
- 3
Knead the mixture with a dough hook for about 5 minutes. Afterward, knead the dough by hand for a couple of minutes on a clean surface until it is nice and smooth.
- 4
Place the dough into a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 hour.
- 5
After an hour, punch the air out of the dough and transfer it onto a clean surface.
- 6
Cut the dough into 8 equal pieces.
- 7
Shape each piece by flattening it out, folding the edges into the center, and pinching the bottom to seal. Roll it against the surface until you have a smooth dough ball.
- 8
Place the dough balls onto a baking sheet and press them down slightly to flatten.
- 9
Cover the buns and let them rest for a second rise for 30 minutes.
- 10
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- 11
Whisk the second egg to create an egg wash and brush it over the top of the rested buns. Sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired.
- 12
Bake at 400°F for approximately 12 minutes until the buns are golden brown.
Notes
Ensure the water is not too hot (above 115°F) or it will kill the yeast. The second rise is crucial for a light, airy texture.
