Ingredients

  • 500 g Pork belly (cut into bite-sized pieces)
  • 20 g Ginger (sliced)
  • 3 Green onions (cut into large pieces)
  • 2 Star anise (whole pieces)
  • 3 Dried chilies (to taste)
  • 15 g Rock sugar (or regular sugar)
  • 1 tbsp Light soy sauce
  • 1 tsp Dark soy sauce (for color)
  • 1 tbsp Oyster sauce
  • 0.5 tsp Five-spice powder
  • 1 tbsp Yellow soybean paste (or fermented soybean paste)
  • 2 Green peppers (cut into pieces)

Steps

  1. 1

Place the pork belly pieces directly into the rice cooker bowl.

  2. 2

Add the sliced ginger and green onions to the meat.

  3. 3

Incorporate the star anise, dried chilies, and rock sugar.

  4. 4

Season with one tablespoon of light soy sauce, a bit of dark soy sauce, oyster sauce, and the five-spice powder.

  5. 5

Add one tablespoon of yellow soybean paste.

  6. 6

Mix all ingredients evenly inside the rice cooker so that the meat is well coated.

  7. 7

Let the mixture marinate for 10 minutes before cooking.

  8. 8

Finally, add the green peppers on top of the meat.

  9. 9

Close the rice cooker lid and press the cook button (standard mode).

  10. 10

Cook for 50 minutes. No water is needed, as the meat will cook in its own fat and juices.

  11. 11

Once the time is up, open the lid, mix lightly, and serve hot with white rice.

Notes

This recipe is ideal because it doesn't require constant supervision. The fat from the pork belly renders during the slow cooking in the rice cooker, which makes the meat tender and eliminates the need for additional oil or water.
