Ingredients
- 7.05 oz Premade pie dough (Roll into one large rectangle, then cut into six squares.)
- 6 Tart green apples (Peeled and cored; use apples of similar size.)
- 0.5 cup Unsalted butter (Cut into 8 thin pats; use 6 pats for the apple cores and reserve the remaining butter for the sauce. Also use enough to grease the baking dish if needed.)
- 0.5 cup Brown sugar (For sprinkling over and inside the apples.)
- 1 tsp Ground cinnamon
- 0.5 tsp Ground nutmeg
- 2 cups Water (For the sauce.)
- 2 cups Brown sugar (For the sauce.)
- 1 tsp Vanilla extract (For the sauce.)
Steps
- 1
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a 9-by-13-inch baking dish with butter and set it aside.
- 2
On a lightly floured work surface, roll the premade pie dough into one large rectangle. Cut the dough into six approximately equal squares.
- 3
Place one peeled, cored apple in the center of each dough square, with the hollowed core facing upward.
- 4
Cut the butter into eight thin pats. Place one pat into the core of each apple, reserving the remaining butter for the sauce.
- 5
Sprinkle the measured brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg over the apples and into their hollowed cores.
- 6
Wet your fingers lightly with water. Bring the four corners of each dough square up over the apple toward the center, then pinch the seams together firmly to seal the dough. Transfer the wrapped apples to the prepared baking dish.
- 7
To make the sauce, place the water, brown sugar reserved for the sauce, vanilla extract, and remaining butter in a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
- 8
Reduce the heat and simmer the sauce for 3–4 minutes, stirring as needed, until the sugar has dissolved and the butter is incorporated.
- 9
Pour the hot sauce evenly over and around the assembled dumplings in the baking dish.
- 10
Bake for 50–60 minutes, until the pastry is golden brown and the apples are tender when tested with a thin knife.
- 11
Serve the dumplings warm, spooning the extra brown-sugar sauce from the baking dish over each serving.
Notes
The source says to reserve remaining butter after inserting butter pats into the apples; the listed 1/2 cup butter is used for the dumplings, sauce, and greasing as needed. Serve warm for the best texture.
