Ingredients
- 2 latas Canned tuna in olive oil, drained (Approximately 140 g each before draining; use the tuna well drained.)
- 0.25 cup Red onion (Finely chopped.)
- 0.25 cup Celery (Chopped slightly larger to provide a crunchy texture.)
- 2 Pickled chiles (Chopped; güero chiles or another pickled chile of your choice may be used.)
- 2 tbsp Scallions (Finely chopped.)
- 1 tbsp Lemon juice (Strained to prevent seeds from getting in.)
- 0.25 cup Mayonnaise (The author uses Japanese mayonnaise, but any mayonnaise may be used.)
- Salt (To taste.)
- Black pepper (To taste.)
- 1 Baguette (Cut into two portions and opened for filling.)
- 2 tbsp Pesto (For spreading on the bread.)
- 0.5 Avocado (Sliced or mashed, to add to the baguette.)
- Salt for the avocado (A little, to taste.)
- 2 servings Potato chips (For serving as a side.)
- Additional pickled chiles (For serving, to taste.)
Steps
- 1
Drain the tuna in olive oil very well and place it in a medium bowl. Flake it lightly with a fork without turning it into a purée.
- 2
Chop the red onion as finely as possible. Chop the celery into slightly larger pieces to preserve its crunchy texture.
- 3
Chop the pickled chiles and scallions. If using jarred chiles, let the excess vinegar drain off before chopping them.
- 4
Add the red onion, celery, chopped chiles, and scallions to the bowl.
- 5
Add the lemon juice, taking care not to let any seeds fall in, and add the mayonnaise. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
- 6
Gently mix until the tuna is evenly coated and the salad has a creamy yet still crunchy texture. Taste and adjust the salt, pepper, or lemon juice if needed.
- 7
To serve the salad on its own, place it on a plate. To prepare the sandwich, cut the baguette into two portions and open it lengthwise.
- 8
Spread the pesto on the inside of the baguette.
- 9
Add the avocado to the baguette and season it with a little salt.
- 10
Fill each baguette portion with the tuna salad. Close the sandwiches and cut them if desired.
- 11
Serve immediately with potato chips and additional pickled chiles.
Notes
The quantities are estimates because the video does not specify exact measurements. The tuna salad can also be eaten on its own without the baguette. Keep the salad refrigerated and ideally consume it the same day.
