Ingredients
- 2 tbsp Vegan butter (or neutral oil)
- 0.25 cup Gluten-free all-purpose flour (can substitute wheat flour if gluten-free is not required)
- 2 cup Unsweetened soy milk (or other neutral plant milk)
- 0.25 tsp Nutmeg (freshly grated preferred)
- Salt (to taste)
- Black pepper (to taste)
Steps
- 1
In a medium saucepan, melt the vegan butter or heat the oil over medium heat.
- 2
Add the gluten-free flour to the melted fat and whisk constantly for 1-2 minutes to create a roux, ensuring it doesn't brown.
- 3
Slowly pour in the unsweetened soy milk a little at a time, whisking vigorously after each addition to prevent lumps from forming.
- 4
Continue to cook the sauce over medium heat, stirring frequently, until the mixture thickens and reaches a gentle simmer, about 5-7 minutes.
- 5
Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the nutmeg, salt, and black pepper.
- 6
Taste and adjust seasoning as needed before using in your desired dish.
Notes
For a richer flavor, you can add a tablespoon of nutritional yeast. If the sauce becomes too thick, whisk in a splash more plant milk until the desired consistency is reached.
