Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 0.333 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tsp ketchup (For the beef patties)
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (For the beef patties)
  • 0.5 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.5 tsp onion powder
  • salt (To taste)
  • black pepper (To taste)
  • 2 packets brown gravy mix
  • 2 cups hot water (For preparing the gravy)
  • 1 tsp ketchup (For the gravy)
  • 0.5 tsp Worcestershire sauce (For the gravy)

Steps

  1. 1

Add the lean ground beef, breadcrumbs, ketchup, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper to a mixing bowl. Mix gently with your hands or a fork just until evenly combined; avoid overmixing so the patties remain tender.

  2. 2

Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each into a compact oval patty about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. Set the patties aside while preparing the skillet.

  3. 3

Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about 3 to 4 minutes per side, until browned on both sides. They do not need to be fully cooked at this stage because they will finish in the gravy. Transfer them to a plate if the skillet is crowded.

  4. 4

In a bowl or measuring jug, whisk the brown gravy mix into the hot water until mostly smooth and dissolved.

  5. 5

Pour the prepared gravy into the skillet. Stir in the ketchup and Worcestershire sauce, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.

  6. 6

Return the browned beef patties to the skillet and spoon some gravy over them. Bring the gravy to a gentle simmer over medium heat.

  7. 7

Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover the skillet, and simmer for about 10 to 15 minutes, turning the patties once if needed, until the patties are cooked through and the gravy has thickened. Ground beef should reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).

  8. 8

Serve the Salisbury steaks hot with plenty of brown gravy spooned over the top. Mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables make suitable accompaniments.
