Ingredients

  • 1 can French onion soup (one can; can size not specified)
  • 4 chicken breasts (use 3 or 4; quantity set to 4 for the recipe)
  • salt (a little, to taste)
  • black pepper (a little, to taste)
  • garlic powder (a little, to taste)
  • French onion dip (one container of your favorite; scoop some onto each chicken breast; container size and amount used not specified)
  • 1 small bag croutons (your favorite; break apart gently; bag size not specified)
  • 3 tbsp butter (melted)
  • 8 slices provolone cheese (two slices per chicken breast, using four breasts)
  • parsley (optional; sprinkle on top if available)

Steps

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Pour one can of French onion soup into the bottom of a casserole dish.

  2. 2

Place 3 or 4 chicken breasts in the dish, in the soup. Season them with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder to taste.

  3. 3

Spoon French onion dip onto each chicken breast, then spread the dip over the breasts with a spoon or spatula.

  4. 4

Set the casserole aside. Break the croutons into smaller pieces in a small bag or bowl.

  5. 5

Add 3 tablespoons of melted butter to the broken croutons and mix until they are coated.

  6. 6

Return the chicken casserole and sprinkle the buttered croutons evenly over the top.

  7. 7

Cover each chicken breast with two slices of provolone cheese.

  8. 8

Cover the casserole dish with aluminum foil and bake at 400°F (200°C) for about 30 minutes.

  9. 9

Carefully remove the foil, then return the uncovered casserole to the oven for about 10 more minutes.

  10. 10

Let the casserole cool for a few minutes; it will be very hot. Sprinkle parsley over the top if desired.

  11. 11

Serve a chicken breast with your choice of accompaniment. The creator served it over mashed potatoes and also suggested green vegetables, rice, noodles, or serving it on its own.
