Ingredients
- 1 lb steak (sliced thin (sirloin recommended))
- 2 broccoli crowns (medium sized, cut into florets and blanched)
- 2 garlic cloves (freshly minced)
- 0.25 onion (chopped)
- 2.5 tbsp hoisin sauce (range of 2-3 tbsp provided)
- 1.5 tbsp rice wine vinegar (range of 1-2 tbsp provided)
- 0.375 cup soy sauce (range of 1/4-1/2 cup provided)
- 1.5 tsp toasted sesame oil (range of 1-2 tsp provided)
- 0.25 cup honey
- 2 tsp cornstarch (for slurry)
- 3 tsp water (for slurry)
- 1.5 tsp white pepper (range of 1-2 tsp provided)
- 1.5 tsp onion powder (range of 1-2 tsp provided)
- 0.5 tsp ground ginger
- 8 oz spaghetti or chow mein noodles (cooked according to package instructions)
Steps
- 1
In a medium bowl, prepare the sauce by whisking together the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice wine vinegar, toasted sesame oil, honey, white pepper, onion powder, and ground ginger.
- 2
In a small separate container, mix 2 tsp cornstarch with 3 tsp water to create a slurry, then whisk this into the sauce mixture until well combined.
- 3
Slice the steak thinly against the grain. Place the steak in a bowl and pour over a portion of the prepared sauce to act as a marinade. Let the steak marinate for 15 to 30 minutes.
- 4
Heat a skillet or wok over high heat until piping hot. Add a small amount of oil if needed, then add the marinated steak slices.
- 5
Sear the steak for a couple of minutes just until a brown crust forms and the meat is mostly cooked through. Remove the steak from the pan and set aside.
- 6
In the same pan, add the chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.
- 7
Add the blanched broccoli crowns to the pan. Pour in the remaining sauce/marinade.
- 8
Cook the sauce and broccoli together for 1-2 minutes until the sauce begins to bubble and thicken due to the cornstarch.
- 9
Add the cooked steak back into the pan along with the cooked spaghetti or chow mein noodles.
- 10
Toss everything together thoroughly until the noodles and beef are evenly coated in the thickened sauce and heated through. Serve immediately.
Notes
The author suggests using sirloin for the steak. If you don't have honey, white sugar can be used as a substitute. The broccoli should be blanched (boiled briefly and shocked in ice water) before adding to the stir-fry to ensure it is tender.
