Ingredients
- 1 can Pillsbury Grands Cinnamon Rolls (Preferably the 5-count variety; reserve the icing packet for the frosting)
- 0.5 cup Heavy whipping cream (Pour directly over the rolls)
- 0.25 cup Salted butter, melted (For the brown-sugar mixture)
- 0.25 cup Brown sugar, packed (For the brown-sugar mixture)
- 1 tsp Ground cinnamon (For the brown-sugar mixture)
- 0.5 tsp Vanilla extract (For the brown-sugar mixture)
- Salt (Pinch, for the brown-sugar mixture)
- 3 oz Cream cheese, softened (For the upgraded frosting)
- 3 tbsp Butter, softened (For the upgraded frosting)
- 0.5 cup Powdered sugar (For the upgraded frosting)
- 0.5 tsp Vanilla extract (For the upgraded frosting)
- Salt (Pinch, for the frosting)
- 1 packet Pillsbury icing packet (Use the entire packet reserved from the cinnamon-roll can)
- Heavy whipping cream (Optional; add 1 tsp at a time if the frosting is too thick)
- Ground cinnamon (Optional, for sprinkling over the finished rolls)
- Flaky salt (Optional finishing garnish)
- Chopped pecans or walnuts (Optional finishing garnish)
Steps
- 1
Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8-by-8-inch or 9-inch round baking dish.
- 2
Open the can, separate the five cinnamon rolls, and arrange them in the prepared dish with a little space between them. Set the icing packet aside for the frosting; do not discard it.
- 3
Pour ½ cup heavy whipping cream directly over the rolls, allowing it to pool around the bottoms and between the rolls.
- 4
In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and a pinch of salt. Stir until evenly blended.
- 5
Spoon small amounts of the brown-sugar mixture over each roll, distributing it across all five rolls rather than dropping it in one spot.
- 6
Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil.
- 7
Bake the covered rolls at 350°F for 15 minutes.
- 8
While the rolls bake, place the softened cream cheese, softened butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, and a pinch of salt in a bowl. Beat until smooth and creamy.
- 9
Add the entire reserved Pillsbury icing packet and beat again until the frosting is completely smooth. If it is too thick, beat in heavy cream 1 teaspoon at a time until thick but spreadable.
- 10
Remove the foil and return the rolls to the oven. Bake for another 12–15 minutes, until the centers are cooked through and the tops are lightly golden. Do not overbake; the rolls should remain soft and gooey.
- 11
Let the rolls stand for about 5 minutes after removing them from the oven. They should still be very warm when frosted.
- 12
Spread the frosting over the warm rolls, allowing some to remain on top and some to melt into the cinnamon-roll spirals and crevices.
- 13
Finish with a light sprinkle of cinnamon and, if desired, flaky salt and chopped pecans or walnuts. Serve warm.
Notes
The covered-then-uncovered baking method helps retain moisture while lightly browning the tops. Serve warm for the softest texture. If using the optional cream in the frosting, add it gradually so the frosting does not become runny.
