Weights are estimates. Together, the ingredients weigh about 670 g before cooking, which is about 165 g per serving.
Steps
Heat the oven to 350°F (180 °C) (175°C (350 °F)). Grease an 8-inch square or round baking dish with butter, then set the dish aside.
Using your hands or the back of a fork, mash the strawberries thoroughly to release as much juice as possible. Stir in ⅓ cup of the brown sugar, then set the strawberry mixture aside.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the melted butter, the remaining ⅓ cup brown sugar, room-temperature milk, and kosher salt.
Add the flour and baking powder to the bowl. Continue whisking just until the batter is smooth; do not overmix.
Transfer the batter to the greased baking dish. Spread it evenly into the corners.
Spoon the mashed strawberries and all of their released juices evenly over the top of the batter.
Place the dish in the oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool for 3 to 5 minutes.
Spoon the warm cake into bowls and serve with vanilla ice cream.
Notes
If using frozen strawberries, defrost them in the microwave first. Optional embellishments mentioned by the author include freshly ground cardamom or ground ginger before baking, or ribbons of fresh basil after baking. The source does not specify an amount of ice cream for serving.
