Ingredients
- 0.5 cup butter (unsalted preferred)
- 12 oz evaporated milk (one standard can)
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- salt (to taste)
- black pepper (to taste)
- 1 pinch nutmeg
- 1.5 cup parmesan cheese (freshly grated)
Steps
- 1
Place a small pot over low heat. Add the butter and evaporated milk.
- 2
Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally to ensure the butter is fully melted and incorporated.
- 3
Whisk in the Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg until well combined.
- 4
Gradually add the freshly grated parmesan cheese to the pot.
- 5
Continue to stir and cook until all of the cheese has melted and the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency.
- 6
Serve immediately over your favorite cooked pasta.
Notes
Using freshly grated parmesan is crucial for this recipe as pre-shredded canned or bagged cheese contains anti-clumping agents that prevent the sauce from becoming perfectly smooth.
