Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp active dry yeast (NOT quick rise yeast)
  • 1.5 cup hot water (from the tap)
  • 3 cup all-purpose flour (plus up to 1/2 cup more as needed)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4 tbsp salted butter (melted; for filling)
  • 2 garlic (cloves, minced or pressed; or 2 tsp garlic paste)
  • 4 tbsp salted butter (melted; for topping)
  • 1 tbsp grated parmesan cheese (canned variety recommended)
  • 0.5 tsp Italian seasoning

Steps

  1. 1

Add 2 tablespoons granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon active dry yeast to the bowl of a stand mixer.

  2. 2

Pour 1 1/2 cups hot water over the sugar and yeast mixture and use a whisk to stir it together.

  3. 3

Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes until it is very puffy and frothy looking on top. If it does not foam, the yeast may be expired or the water was the wrong temperature.

  4. 4

Add 3 cups of all-purpose flour and 1 teaspoon of salt to the yeast mixture.

  5. 5

Use the dough hook attachment to mix the dough together. The dough should pull away from the sides of the bowl and form a slightly tacky ball. If the dough is too sticky, add the additional 1/2 cup of flour gradually as needed.

  6. 6

Cover the bowl with a clean towel and let the dough rise for 10 minutes.

  7. 7

Spray your countertop with cooking spray to prevent sticking.

  8. 8

Use a rolling pin to roll the dough into a 12"x18" rectangle, roughly the size of a standard cookie sheet.

  9. 9

In a small bowl, combine 4 tablespoons of melted salted butter and 2 cloves of minced garlic.

  10. 10

Brush the garlic butter mixture evenly over the surface of the rolled-out dough.

  11. 11

    Fold the dough in half.

  12. 12

Use a pizza cutter to cut the dough into 1-inch wide strips.

  13. 13

Twist each strip by holding one end in each hand and twisting in opposite directions, then place them on a cookie sheet.

  14. 14

Let the breadsticks rest on the pan for 15 minutes.

  15. 15

While the breadsticks are resting, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

  16. 16

Bake the breadsticks for 13-18 minutes until golden brown.

  17. 17

While the breadsticks bake, combine the remaining 4 tablespoons of melted butter, 1 tablespoon parmesan cheese, and 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning in a small bowl.

  18. 18

Brush the seasoned butter over the warm cooked breadsticks immediately after removing them from the oven. Serve warm.

Notes

Water Temperature: Use hot tap water. If the yeast doesn't foam after 5 minutes, start over with hotter water or fresh yeast. Garlic: 1 teaspoon of garlic paste or jarred minced garlic can be substituted for each clove. Twisting: If you prefer, you can leave the strips straight rather than twisting them.
