Weights are estimates. Together, the ingredients weigh about 1.4 kg before cooking, which is about 175 g per serving.
Steps
Drain the mandarin oranges, reserving five orange segments for the decoration. Drain both cans as described in the source.
Place the 8 ounces of Cool Whip and the drained mandarin oranges into a large bowl.
Add the undrained crushed pineapple to the bowl.
Sprinkle the dry instant vanilla pudding mix over the fruit and whipped topping. Do not prepare the pudding separately.
Gently fold everything together in the large bowl until combined. The pineapple juice will soften the dry pudding mix and help prevent a grainy texture.
Flatten and smooth the surface slightly so the dessert looks even.
Arrange the five reserved mandarin orange segments in a small decorative pattern in the center.
Refrigerate the dessert until chilled and set, about 1½ to 2 hours. It will become fluffier and firmer the longer it chills.
Notes
The source mentions optional additions such as maraschino cherries, marshmallows, shredded coconut, or other fruit, but they are not part of the base recipe. The source says the dessert was served after about 1½ hours, while also noting that a longer chilling time makes it firmer.
