Ingredients

  • 500 g Potatoes (Peeled and cut into pieces)
  • 250 g Cauliflower
  • 500 g 5% fat ground beef
  • 1 Onion (Coarsely chopped)
  • 1.5 Carrot (The recipe indicates 1 to 2 carrots; peeled and cut into small dice)
  • 1 c. à café Olive oil
  • 1 Bouillon cube (Beef or vegetable)
  • 225 ml Water (The recipe indicates 200 to 250 ml)
  • 2 c. à soupe Tomato paste
  • Salt (Season to taste; the recipe does not specify a quantity.)
  • Pepper (Season to taste; the recipe does not specify a quantity.)
  • Grated Emmental (Optional; the recipe indicates adding a little on top, without specifying a quantity.)

Steps

  1. 1

Peel the potatoes and cut them into medium-sized pieces.

  2. 2

Place them in a saucepan, cover with cold water, and start cooking from cold.

  3. 3

When the water comes to a boil, add the cauliflower and continue cooking until the potatoes and cauliflower are tender.

  4. 4

While they cook, coarsely chop the onion. Peel the carrot or carrots, cut them in half and then into quarters, and dice them finely.

  5. 5

Heat the olive oil in a frying pan. Add the onion and carrots, then sauté them.

  6. 6

Add the bouillon cube and water to the pan. Let it reduce until the bouillon has been absorbed.

  7. 7

Drain the cooked potatoes and cauliflower, then place them in a mixing bowl.

  8. 8

Season the vegetables with salt and pepper, then roughly mash them to make a rustic mash.

  9. 9

Add the ground beef to the pan and mix well with the sautéed vegetables.

  10. 10

Add the tomato paste and mix.

  11. 11

Place the meat mixture in the bottom of an ovenproof dish and press it down firmly.

  12. 12

Cover the meat mixture with the potato and cauliflower mash.

  13. 13

If desired, sprinkle a little grated Emmental over the top.

  14. 14

Bake for 10 minutes at 180 °C, then serve.

Notes

The quantities of carrots and water are given as ranges; the displayed values correspond to their midpoint. The source does not specify the quantities of salt, pepper, or Emmental, nor the cooking time for the vegetables before they become tender.
