Ingredients

  • 2.5 lb sausage (Use Polish sausage (kielbasa), smoked sausage, beef sausage, or turkey sausage; source specifies 2–3 lb.)
  • 2 cup BBQ sauce (Use approximately ½–⅔ cup per pound of sausage when scaling the recipe.)
  • 2 tsp liquid smoke (Optional.)
  • 0.25 cup light brown sugar (Sprinkle over the sausage and sauce before baking.)

Steps

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C), or Gas Mark 4. Prepare a 9×13-inch baking dish.

  2. 2

Slice the sausage into approximately ½-inch-thick rounds. If using frozen sliced sausage, it can be used directly, but plan to add about 10 minutes to the baking time.

  3. 3

Pour the BBQ sauce into a large mixing bowl.

  4. 4

Add the optional liquid smoke to the BBQ sauce and stir until combined.

  5. 5

Add the sliced sausage to the bowl. Toss thoroughly until all of the pieces are coated in the sauce.

  6. 6

Transfer the sauced sausage to the 9×13-inch baking dish and spread it into an even layer.

  7. 7

Sprinkle the light brown sugar evenly over the top of the sausage and sauce.

  8. 8

Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes, or until the sauce is bubbling and sticky and has visibly caramelized. If using frozen sliced sausage, bake for approximately 50–55 minutes total.

  9. 9

Serve hot with rice, vegetables, or both.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To freeze, place the cooled sausage and sauce in a heavy-duty freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months; thaw overnight in the refrigerator. Reheat in a baking dish covered with foil at 350°F (175°C) for 10–15 minutes. The sausage can also be mixed into baked beans after they have cooked.
