Ingredients
- 4 slices thick-cut bacon (chopped)
- 0.5 yellow onion (medium, finely chopped (1/2 cup))
- 2 garlic (minced)
- 1 tbsp white wine vinegar (or red wine vinegar)
- 0.75 cup chicken broth
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 0.25 tsp ground black pepper
- 0.125 tsp salt
- 12 oz trimmed fresh green beans (cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces; or 1 (10 to 12 ounce) bag frozen cut green beans)
Steps
- 1
Cook bacon in an extra-large skillet over medium heat until crisp, 8 to 10 minutes.
- 2
Use a slotted spoon to transfer bacon to a paper towel–lined plate.
- 3
Reserve 2 tablespoons of the rendered bacon grease in the skillet; discard remaining grease.
- 4
Add onion to the skillet with reserved bacon grease. Cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and lightly browned, about 4 minutes.
- 5
Add garlic and vinegar; cook until fragrant and vinegar is slightly reduced, about 1 minute.
- 6
Stir in chicken broth, brown sugar, pepper, and salt; bring to a boil.
- 7
Add green beans and crumbled bacon. Cover and reduce heat to medium-low.
- 8
Cook until green beans are tender and flavors are well combined, 10 to 15 minutes. If liquid reduces too quickly, add additional chicken broth, 1 tablespoon at a time, as needed.
Notes
If liquid reduces too quickly during the final simmer, add additional chicken broth, 1 tablespoon at a time, as needed.
