Ingredients
- 250 g butter (Cut into pieces; optionally use some to grease the baking dish.)
- 250 g sugar
- 250 g flour
- 2 eggs
- 0.5 stuk vanilla pod (Can be replaced with 1 tsp vanilla extract.)
- salt (A pinch.)
- 1 el milk (For brushing the top.)
Steps
- 1
Preheat the oven to 180 °C with conventional top and bottom heat. Grease a baking dish or cake pan and line the bottom with a sheet of parchment paper.
- 2
Cut the butter into pieces. Place the butter, sugar, flour, eggs, vanilla, and salt in a mixing bowl.
- 3
Mix everything gently and briefly with a mixer, preferably using the paddle attachment, not the whisk. Mix only until everything is just combined; do not incorporate air into the batter and do not mix longer than necessary.
- 4
Spoon the batter into the greased, parchment-lined baking dish. Smooth the surface.
- 5
Brush the top evenly with the milk. Then draw a pattern across the surface with a fork.
- 6
Bake the butter cake for 20 to 25 minutes at 180 °C with conventional top and bottom heat, until the top is nicely browned.
- 7
Allow the butter cake to cool completely after baking. Cut it into squares while cold; once cooled, it is easiest to cut and develops its characteristic dense, moist texture.
Notes
The creator mentions plain as a variation and indicates that the top can optionally be sprinkled with nuts. Allow the cake to cool thoroughly before cutting it.
