Ingredients
- 2 tilapia fillets
- salt (to taste)
- black pepper (to taste)
- 2 tbsp cooking oil (for frying)
- 3 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1 red onion (sliced into rings)
- 3 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 tbsp calamansi juice (or lemon juice)
- 0.25 cup water
- 0.5 tsp sugar (to balance flavors)
Steps
- 1
Season the tilapia fillets on both sides with salt and black pepper.
- 2
Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Fry the tilapia fillets until golden brown and cooked through on both sides. Remove from the pan and set aside.
- 3
In the same pan, sauté the minced garlic until fragrant.
- 4
Add the sliced red onion rings and sauté briefly until slightly softened but still retaining some crunch. Remove some of the onions for garnishing later.
- 5
Pour in the soy sauce, calamansi juice, and water. Stir in the sugar.
- 6
Bring the liquid to a simmer. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.
- 7
Return the fried tilapia fillets to the pan and spoon the sauce over them, or pour the sauce and onions directly over the plated fish.
- 8
Top with the reserved onion rings and serve hot with steamed rice.
Notes
This recipe is a fish version of the classic Filipino Beef Bistek. If calamansi is unavailable, lemon or lime juice can be used as a substitute.
