Ingredients

  • 1 can sardines (in oil or water (e.g., Fishwife brand))
  • 0.5 bunch cilantro (tender leaves and stems)
  • 0.5 jalapeño (for the sauce)
  • 0.5 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp hot sauce (El Yucateco brand recommended)
  • 2 lime juice (juice of 2 limes)
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (for the sauce)
  • 0.5 cucumber (peeled, cored and thinly sliced)
  • 0.5 avocado (thinly sliced)
  • 0.25 red onion (thinly sliced)
  • jalapeño (thinly sliced, for garnish)
  • black pepper (to taste)
  • extra olive oil and cilantro (to finish)

Steps

  1. 1

In a blender, combine the 1/2 bunch of cilantro, 1/2 jalapeño, 1/2 tsp cumin, lime juice from 2 limes, 1 tsp kosher salt, and 1 tbsp olive oil.

  2. 2

Blend the mixture until completely smooth to create the aguachile marinade.

  3. 3

Open the can of sardines and place them in a small bowl or container. Pour the blended sauce over the sardines.

  4. 4

Let the sardines marinate in the sauce for 5 to 6 minutes to absorb the flavors.

  5. 5

Carefully transfer the marinated sardines to a serving plate.

  6. 6

Top the sardines with the sliced cucumber, avocado, red onion, and extra sliced jalapeño.

  7. 7

Finish the dish with a crack of black pepper, a drizzle of extra olive oil, and a few sprigs of fresh cilantro.

  8. 8

Serve immediately with tostadas and additional hot sauce on the side.

Notes

The author suggests this as a 'glass skin' snack due to the high omega-3 content in sardines and healthy fats in avocado and olive oil.
