Ingredients
- 1 cup whole milk (warmed to about 110°F)
- 2.25 tsp instant yeast (1 packet)
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 0.25 cup salted butter (melted)
- 1 tsp salt
- 3.5 cup all purpose flour
- oil (for greasing the bowl)
- melted butter (for brushing on top after baking)
Steps
- 1
To prepare the dough, mix the warm milk, yeast, and sugar together in a large mixing bowl.
- 2
Lightly stir together, then cover and allow to sit for 5 minutes until the yeast has bloomed (you should see little bubbles and foam at the top).
- 3
Once bloomed, add the egg, melted butter, salt, and 1 cup of flour. Stir together.
- 4
Add the remaining flour gradually, about one cup at a time, mixing in between additions until a dough forms.
- 5
Turn the dough onto a clean counter and knead for 5 minutes. The motion should be turn, fold, and repeat until the dough is smooth.
- 6
Lightly grease a large bowl with oil and place the ball of dough inside, briefly turning it to coat all sides in the oil.
- 7
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and allow to rise in a relatively warm environment for 1-2 hours, or until double in size.
- 8
Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan.
- 9
When the dough is ready, punch it down to release the air and divide into 12 equal pieces.
- 10
Shape each piece into a smooth ball by rolling them on the countertop under your palm.
- 11
Arrange the balls in the prepared baking pan, leaving a little room between them since they will grow during the second rise.
- 12
Cover the pan with plastic wrap and allow to rise again until doubled in size, about 45 minutes to 1 hour.
- 13
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- 14
Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.
- 15
Remove from the oven and immediately brush the tops with melted butter. Serve warm.
Notes
If you prefer to use a stand mixer, you can follow the same steps using the dough hook attachment. The author suggests pairing these with a whipped cinnamon honey butter.
