Ingredients
- 2 tbsp Butter
- 1 tbsp Olive oil
- 4 Large yellow onions (Thinly sliced)
- 1 tbsp Brown sugar
- 1 tsp Dried thyme
- 0.5 tsp Salt (The recipe also indicates seasoning with more salt to taste)
- 0.5 cup Sour cream
- 0.5 cup Mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp Garlic powder
- 1 cup Grated Gruyère cheese (Can be substituted with mozzarella or white cheddar)
- 0.5 cup Grated mozzarella cheese
- 0.5 cup Grated Parmesan cheese
- Pepper (To taste)
- Baguette, crackers, or crostini (For serving; use warm baguette)
Steps
- 1
Melt the butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- 2
Add the onions and cook, stirring frequently, for 20–25 minutes, until they reduce and become deeply golden. Do not let them brown immediately: the heat should cook them first, and the bottom should brown only at the end.
- 3
Stir in the brown sugar, thyme, and salt. Remove the mixture from the heat and let it cool.
- 4
Preheat the oven to 375 °F (190 °C).
- 5
In a bowl, mix the sour cream, mayonnaise, garlic powder, Gruyère, mozzarella, and Parmesan until combined.
- 6
Gently fold in the cooled onions. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- 7
Spread the mixture in a baking dish or cast-iron skillet.
- 8
Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 10 minutes.
- 9
Remove the aluminum foil and bake for 5 more minutes, until the dip is bubbly and golden on top.
- 10
Serve hot with warm baguette slices, crackers, or crostini.
Notes
The recipe mentions additional salt and pepper to taste but does not specify quantities. It does not indicate how many servings it yields; it is estimated to serve 8. The baguette, crackers, and crostini are offered as accompaniments, with no quantities specified.
