Ingredients
- 1 cup butter (softened)
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 egg (large)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract (or preferred flavoring)
- 3 cup all-purpose flour (plus more for flouring surface)
- 2 tsp baking powder
- water (a little bit if dough is too dry)
Steps
- 1
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- 2
In a large bowl or stand mixer, cream together 1 cup of butter and 1 cup of granulated sugar until smooth.
- 3
Add in 1 egg and your flavoring (such as vanilla extract) and cream again until well combined.
- 4
Add 3 cups of all-purpose flour and 2 teaspoons of baking powder.
- 5
Mix the ingredients together. Continue mixing until the dough comes together and feels soft, like Play-Doh. If the dough is too dry and not coming together, add a tiny bit of water.
- 6
Lightly flour your work surface and roll out the dough to your desired thickness.
- 7
Use your favorite cookie cutters to cut out shapes and place them onto a baking pan.
- 8
Bake in the preheated oven for 6 to 8 minutes, until the cookies puff up but are not yet browned.
- 9
Allow the cookies to cool completely on the pan or a wire rack.
- 10
Once cooled, frost with royal icing or buttercream as desired.
Notes
The dough should feel like Play-Doh; if it is too sticky, you may need a touch more flour, but if it's too crumbly, add a teaspoon of water at a time. These cookies are designed not to spread, so the shape you cut is the shape you'll get.
