Ingredients

  • 6 Bacon (slices or strips of smoked bacon)
  • Water (enough to just cover the bacon in the pan)

Steps

  1. 1

Place the bacon slices in a cold skillet, ensuring they are not overcrowded.

  2. 2

Turn the heat to medium. Wait for the pan to heat up and the bacon to visibly begin cooking.

  3. 3

Add enough water to the pan to just cover the bacon strips.

  4. 4

Cook the bacon over medium heat until all the water has completely evaporated. During this process, the water keeps the temperature low so that the fat renders without burning the meat.

  5. 5

Once the water has evaporated, let the bacon brown in its own rendered fat for an additional minute until it reaches your desired level of crispiness.

  6. 6

Remove the bacon from the pan and place it on a sheet of absorbent paper towel.

  7. 7

Gently pat with more paper towels to remove any excess grease before serving.

Notes

This method prevents the bacon from becoming tough or chewy because it allows the fat to render and cook completely before the protein browns too much. It is also ideal for avoiding excessive splattering at the start of cooking.
