Ingredients
- 1 Egg (Large, fresh)
- 0.25 cup White Vinegar (Used for the soaking solution; equal parts with water)
- 0.25 cup Water (Used for the soaking solution; equal parts with vinegar)
- Hot Sauce (For serving (fyrstarter brand suggested))
Steps
- 1
In a small bowl, combine equal parts water and white vinegar (enough to submerge an egg).
- 2
Carefully crack the egg into the water and vinegar mixture.
- 3
Allow the egg to sit in the mixture for at least 10 minutes. This allows a soft layer to form on the outside of the whites, which prevents them from separating in the boiling water.
- 4
While the egg soaks, bring a pot of water to a gentle simmer (not a rolling boil).
- 5
Gently pour the egg from the bowl into the simmering water.
- 6
Poach the egg for approximately 3 to 3.5 minutes, depending on your desired yolk consistency.
- 7
Remove the egg with a slotted spoon and serve immediately, topped with hot sauce if desired.
Notes
The vinegar soak creates a 'skin' on the egg white that keeps it together during the cooking process. For jammy yolks, users suggest 3.5 minutes of cook time.
