Ingredients
- 16 oz firm tofu (Pressed well to release moisture, dried, and cut into cubes or desired shapes.)
- 1 tsp ginger garlic paste (Or minced ginger and garlic.)
- 0.5 tsp turmeric powder
- 2 tbsp soy yogurt
- 1 tsp paprika (Or Kashmiri chilli powder.)
- 0.5 tsp pepper powder
- 0.5 tsp garam masala powder
- 1 tsp cayenne (Or red chilli powder; optional.)
- 0.5 tsp kasoori methi (Or dried fenugreek leaves.)
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp olive oil (For the marinade.)
- salt (To taste.)
- 2 tsp oil (For shallow frying tofu; also used to brush the air-fryer basket and tofu when air-frying.)
- onion rings (For serving.)
- lime wedges (For serving.)
- green chutney (For serving.)
Steps
- 1
Press the tofu well to release its moisture. Dry it thoroughly, then cut it into cubes or your desired shapes.
- 2
Mix the ginger garlic paste, turmeric, soy yogurt, paprika, pepper, garam masala, cayenne if using, kasoori methi, lemon juice, olive oil, and salt together to make a thick marinade paste.
- 3
Toss the tofu with the marinade, ensuring that all pieces are coated on both sides. Let the tofu sit for 15–30 minutes.
- 4
For air-frying, preheat the air fryer to 390°F (200°C) for 6 minutes.
- 5
Brush the air-fryer basket and marinated tofu with oil. Air-fry at 390°F (200°C) for 8 minutes, turning the tofu once midway through cooking.
- 6
For shallow-frying, heat a skillet or tawa. Spread the oil over the cooking surface and lay the tofu pieces in the pan with one side facing down.
- 7
Cook the tofu on both sides until it develops a char and is cooked through. Watch it carefully so the cubes do not burn.
- 8
Serve the tandoori tofu hot with onion rings, lime wedges, and green chutney.
Notes
The recipe is described as medium spicy; adjust the spices to taste. Use firm tofu and press it thoroughly so it retains its shape. Regular yogurt and paneer may be used by dairy eaters instead of soy yogurt and tofu. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days and reheat before serving. Do not freeze, as the tofu texture may suffer after thawing. The tofu can also be served in a tortilla or roti wrap with vegetables and sauces.
