Ingredients

  • 0.25 cup butter
  • 4 oz cream cheese
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 cup milk (can use 1%, 2%, or whole milk)
  • 6 oz parmesan cheese (grated from a can or fresh shredded)
  • black pepper (to taste)

Steps

  1. 1

Combine the butter, cream cheese, garlic powder, milk, parmesan cheese, and black pepper in a saucepan.

  2. 2

Place the saucepan on the stove over medium heat.

  3. 3

Stir the mixture with a whisk as the cream cheese and the butter melt.

  4. 4

Once the mixture begins to boil, whisk constantly so it doesn’t burn.

  5. 5

After about 2-3 minutes of boiling, turn down the heat to medium-low.

  6. 6

Let it cook for about 5-7 minutes more while whisking, until it is a little thicker but not quite the final desired thickness.

  7. 7

Remove from heat; the sauce will continue to thicken as it cools down.

  8. 8

Serve over your choice of pasta.

Notes

Be careful not to over-thicken the sauce on the stove, as it will become chunky once removed from heat. If you want to add protein, sauté chicken breast or shrimp in the butter first before adding the other ingredients. For a thinner sauce, you can increase the milk to 2 cups.
