Ingredients
- 3 tbsp all-purpose flour (Used in the 1:1:1 gravy ratio)
- 3 tbsp fat (Use bacon grease, vegetable oil, avocado oil, or butter. If using butter, add oil because butter burns quickly.)
- 3 cup liquid (Use water, or chicken stock or broth. Have it measured and ready before cooking the roux.)
- chicken bouillon (A little, to taste. Do not use bouillon when using chicken stock or broth because the gravy may become too salty.)
- granulated garlic (Season to taste; the creator used a little.)
- granulated onion (Season to taste; the creator used a little.)
- black pepper (Season to taste.)
- Worcestershire sauce (The creator adds a shot at the end.)
Steps
- 1
Measure the flour, fat, and liquid before beginning. Keep the liquid immediately available, because the browned roux can go from toasted to burnt quickly.
- 2
Heat the fat in a pan over medium heat. If you have never made gravy before, use medium heat; do not exceed medium-high.
- 3
Add the all-purpose flour to the heated fat and stir to form a roux.
- 4
Cook and brown the roux, stirring, to remove the raw flour taste. Brown it to your preferred degree; the creator demonstrates a standard, basic brown gravy and notes that a little extra browning is not cause for panic as long as it does not burn.
- 5
Add the chicken bouillon, granulated garlic, granulated onion, and black pepper. Season from the heart, using the amounts you prefer.
- 6
Cook the seasonings with the browned roux for about 1 minute so they toast and bloom. Have the liquid ready while this happens.
- 7
Immediately add the liquid to the seasoned roux. If using chicken stock or broth, omit the chicken bouillon to avoid making the gravy too salty.
- 8
Turn the heat to high and whisk vigorously. The mixture may initially look separated or lumpy; continue whisking until the gravy comes together smoothly.
- 9
Add a shot of Worcestershire sauce and whisk it into the finished gravy. Serve the gravy while hot.
Notes
The recipe uses a 1:1:1 ratio: 1 tablespoon flour, 1 tablespoon fat, and 1 cup liquid. For thicker or thinner gravy, adjust the ingredient quantities while maintaining the ratio. The source does not specify an exact amount of seasoning, a precise final simmer time, or a serving temperature beyond serving the gravy after it comes together.
