Ingredients
- 1 white onion (Diced; finely or roughly diced, or minced/omitted if desired)
- 3 tbsp cooking oil
- water (Enough to fill the cooking pot about halfway for boiling the tortellini)
- 0.5 lb Canadian bacon (Cubed into bite-sized pieces; ham may be substituted)
- 2 lb cheese tortellini (Cook according to package directions)
- 1 lb ground beef (The source uses 80/20 beef, though any fat content may be used)
- 1 lb Italian sausage
- 1 tbsp garlic (Minced or prepared garlic)
- 1 tbsp Italian seasoning (Other seasoning may be used)
- 28 oz pizza sauce (Two 14-ounce cans; the source uses Prego pizza sauce, but any pizza sauce may be used)
- 2.5 oz bacon pieces (Use actual bacon pieces rather than bacon bits)
- 16 oz shredded mozzarella cheese (Spread over the top)
- pepperoni (Add enough to decorate or cover the top, according to preference)
- Parmesan cheese (For sprinkling over the finished skillet)
Steps
- 1
Dice the white onion into small pieces. Finely dice, roughly dice, or mince it according to preference; it may also be omitted for people who dislike onion.
- 2
Heat a large skillet over medium to medium-high heat. At the same time, fill a separate pot about halfway with water and begin heating it for the tortellini.
- 3
Add the 3 tablespoons of cooking oil to the hot skillet and let the oil heat.
- 4
Add the diced onion to the skillet. Stir so each piece is coated with oil, then sauté until the onion is somewhat translucent.
- 5
While the onion cooks, cube the Canadian bacon into bite-sized pieces, approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch, and set it aside.
- 6
When the water reaches a light boil, add the cheese tortellini. Give it one gentle stir to keep the pieces from sticking together, then cook according to the package directions, approximately 3 to 5 minutes, or until cooked through.
- 7
When the onion is translucent, add the ground beef to the skillet. Add the Italian sausage as well, then break both meats apart with a utensil and cook until fully cooked through.
- 8
As the meat cooks, incorporate the sautéed onion into the beef and sausage. Make a small well in the center of the meat mixture.
- 9
Add the minced garlic to the well, then stir it into the meat and onion mixture.
- 10
Add the Italian seasoning and mix until the seasoning and garlic are evenly incorporated throughout the cooked meat.
- 11
Drain the cooked tortellini once it is done and set it aside. Drain the cooked meat mixture as well, removing the excess rendered fat.
- 12
Add the cubed Canadian bacon to the drained meat mixture and stir to distribute it.
- 13
Pour in the pizza sauce. Start with one 14-ounce can, then add the second can; the source uses both cans for a total of 28 ounces. Stir until the sauce, meats, and aromatics are well blended.
- 14
Add the drained tortellini to the skillet. Gently mix so the meat and sauce coat the tortellini without breaking the filled pasta.
- 15
Stir in the bacon pieces until they are distributed throughout the skillet.
- 16
Spread the 16 ounces of shredded mozzarella over the top of the tortellini mixture.
- 17
Scatter pepperoni over the mozzarella as a pizza-style topping.
- 18
Cover the skillet and cook for about 3 to 4 minutes, just until the mozzarella melts. Do not cook much longer because the other ingredients are already cooked.
- 19
Remove the skillet from the heat and let it stand for about 5 minutes.
- 20
For a more browned or crisp cheese topping, broil the skillet for about 3 to 4 minutes, or until the cheese melts and reaches the desired doneness.
- 21
Sprinkle the finished skillet with Parmesan cheese and serve hot.
Notes
The source gives approximate cooking directions and does not specify a final internal temperature for the meats. Cook the ground beef and Italian sausage thoroughly before proceeding. The source says the cheese may be broiled for a more crispy finish, but the creator removed the skillet before the cheese had fully melted. Canadian bacon may be replaced with ham, and the sauce and seasonings may be substituted according to preference.
